HYDERABAD: Advisor to Chief Minister Sindh Sharmila Farooqui
has said that the time has come to remove discrimination
in order to put the country on the path of progress, peace
and stability. Talking to newsmen after attending a seminar
on “Violence against Women” at Sindhi Language
Authority on Thursday, the advisor said that discrimination
based on creed, caste, political, social, religious and
economical backgrounds should be eliminated. A culture of
reconciliation should be developed, she said and added that
in this regard Pakistan Peoples Party had already started
the process of political understanding according to the
vision of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto. Responding to
a question regarding human right violations particularly
with women, the advisor said that besides the government,
it was the responsibility of all stakeholders including
media and non-governmental organizations to jointly struggle
for its elimination. On the directives of Sindh Chief Minister
Syed Qaim Ali Shah, the advisor said that Sindh Home Minister
and Inspector General of Police had taken initiatives against
Karo Kari and established four Anti Karo-Kari Centres at
Ghotki, Mirpurkhas, Naushero Feroze and Sukkur to stop this
menace. Karachi police initiated another good step of establishing
Victim Help Centre in Women Police Station Karachi to provide
help to women who had suffered torture at the hands of their
family or counterparts, Sharmila said. Similarly a Child
Rights Cell had also been established in the office of Sindh
Provincial Ombdusman with the objective to protect the rights
of children. Bills against Domestic Violence and Harassment
at Workplaces were passed by the National Assembly because
of PPP’s efforts she said. Sharmila Farooqui highly
praised the role of MNA Faryal Talpur for initiating efforts
for women protection. Replying to a question about women
protection bills status in Sindh Assembly, the advisor said
that the law department was reviewing them. To another question,
Sharmila Farooqui said that withdrawal of cases against
89 Baloch leaders under Aghaz-e-Huqooq Balochistan was a
good step of the Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani.
