LAHORE: Youm-e-Ashur, the martyrdom day of Hazrat Imam Hussain (Allah Be Pleased with Him) and his 72 companions, was observed peacefully with all the reverence and solemnity on Sunday. A number of Tazia, Alam and Zuljinnah processions were taken out from different parts of the Punjab capital to commemorate the supreme sacrifices made by the grandson of Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) while fighting against tyranny in 7th century. The main Zuljinnah procession, which started amid tight security from Nisar Haveli inside Mochi Gate on Saturday midnight terminated at Karabla Gamey Shah at around 7.13 p.m. on Sunday after passing through Mohallah Chehal Bibian, Mubarak Haveli, Chowk Nawab Sahib, Kucha Qazi Khana, Chohata Mufti Baqar, Chowk Purani Kotwali, Kashmiri Bazaar, Suneri Masjid, Dabbi Bazaar, Suha Bazaar, Gumti Bazaar, Rang Mahal, Said Mithha Bazaar, Teshil Bazaar, Bazaar Hakiman, Uunchi Masjid and Bhati Chowk. Mourning processions combined with round the clock Majalis-e-Aza at all Imambargahs took the mourning to peak on the Ashura. The ulema and zakireen threw light on the life of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) with special focus on the Karbla tragedy that took place in 671 A.D. along the River Euphrates in present day Iraq. Besides distributing meal, people had set up sabeels of milk and cold drinks for the Azadaran (mourners) along the entire route.
The city police made elaborate security arrangements to check any sort of untoward incident during Majalis-e-Aza, `Alam’ and `Tazia’ processions. Punjab Health Department, City District Government and Rescue-1122 Service made their services available for the processionists. In the morning, thousands of Lahorites visited city graveyards and offered fateha for their deceased nears and dears besides showering flower petals on the graves. Traditionally, people visit graveyards on Ashur day to offer fateha for their late friends and family members. Most of the rush was witnessed at Miani Sahib graveyard, city’s oldest cemetery that holds in its vast bosom countless men and women of genius, including religious scholars, freedom fighters, poets, writers, intellectuals, mystics and political leaders. Radio Pakistan, Pakistan Television and private channels presented special programmes to highlight the supreme sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions.
