ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari
has asked Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to review the
list of the NRO beneficiaries and remove all discrepancies
in it and remove the names of all those who have been wrongly
implicated in the list.
According to sources, the President expressed these views
during his meeting with the PM at the Aiwan-e-Sadr on Monday.
This was the first meeting between the two after the NRO beneficiaries’
list was made public. Besides the NRO list and the fate of
the ministers, the two exchanged their views on overall situation
in the country, the Balochistan Package, Waziristan operation
and other national and political matters.
Sources told that President, while taking into account the
reservations of the ministers, bureaucrats and other people
on the NRO list, directed the PM to review the list and an
action should be taken against those whose names have wrongly
been put in the list. During the meeting, the PM and the President
agreed that the government would not defend any NRO beneficiary
minister or Member of the Parliament and they would have to
get themselves cleared from the court. It was also decided
that the government would also not ask the NRO beneficiary
minister to resign, however, if someone does resign on his
own then his resignation would be accepted.
The President said that if he was not the president and was
not bounded by the constitutional constraints then he himself
would have appeared before the court. He further added that
facing courts is not a new thing for him and the 8-year imprisonment
could prove nothing against him. He said that all cases against
him were political and personally motivated, sources told.
On the other, while briefing the media, the Spokesperson of
the President, Farhatullah Babar said that the Prime Minister
discussed with the President the salient features of the Balochistan
Empowerment Package, which will be unveiled in the joint sitting
of the Parliament today (Tuesday). The Package contains a
series of the constitutional reforms, economic measures and
administrative steps to assuage the hurt feelings of the people
of Balochistan. Mr. Babar said that the President complimented
the Prime Minister on finalization
