ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court
of Pakistan here on Monday directed the government to look
into the matter of issuance of CNICs to married Hindu couples.
A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad
Chaudhry also directed National Database and Registration
Authority to facilitate the Hindu community. The directions
were issued on a suo motu taken by the CJP on November 16
on a press clippings regarding plight of Pram Sari Mai of
Rahimyar Khan.
DPO Rahimyar Khan appeared before the bench and said that
there was no criminal case against her and requested that
legislation should be done over the issue. Acting Attorney
General for Pakistan Shah Khawar was also present during
proceedings.
The newspaper column had reflected the problems faced by
married Hindu woman in Pakistan. The column narrated a story
of married Hindu woman named Pram Sari Mai wife of Goband
Jee R/o Rahimyar Khan who could not get her passport to
visit India even after paying a huge loss. The Hindu couples
cannot get their CNIC cards and passport because they faced
problems in getting their marriages registered as per custom
of their Hindu religion and for acquiring the said documents
in Pakistan they have to pay a huge amount. She had submitted
an application with NADRA authorities, but they also refused
to treat her as married woman.—Agencies |
