can be source to groom community leaders: Dr.
Naushad Shaikh

JAMSHORO: The role of universities as nurseries
to groom and provide community leaders to the
society was discussed at length in a meeting
held at Liaquat University of Medical and Health
Sciences, Jamshoro, on Thursday.
LUMHS Vice Chancellor, Prof.Dr. Naushad Ahmed
Shaikh chaired the meeting, also attended by
Dean of Biological Sciences, Baqai Medical University-
Karachi, Prof.
Peter Bailie. The participants discussed Capacity
Building in Research project, being jointly
undertaken by LUMHS, Baqai University and Agha
Khan University - Karachi in collaboration with
University of Birmingham, United Kingdom. Prof.
Naushad A Shaikh said that since his appointment
as LUMHS Vice Chancellor the institution has
been able to maintain strict discipline within
its academic and administrative spheres.
Now the focus is on promoting meaningful research
and development of Ph.D. Programme in the university,
he said. Prof. Naushad A Shaikh said that the
university will welcome collaborative initiatives
offered by Pakistan based as well as foreign
universities.
Prof. Bailie speaking on the occasion said that
western universities were playing key role in
conducting socio-economic research, related
to community problems and providing solutions
to the concerned authorities and governments.
He urged that Pakistani universities also need
to work on these lines and help their communities.
The meeting also discussed possibility of Liaquat
University of Medical and Health Sciences Jamshoro
getting declared as Centre of Excellence by
Higher Education Commission. Director Medical
Research Centre, LUMHS, Prof. Khaleequ- ur -Rehman,
Director, Postgraduate Studies, Prof. Khalique
A. Siddiqui and Deputy Director Research/Linkage
Coordinator, Dr. Imdad A. Khushk also took part
in the deliberations.
